I got dumped the day before tech week started. (9 to 5 the Musical Recap)

(i wrote this maybe 2.5 moths ago from the publish date. boys are dumb, i am but a girl. dont hate me for getting emotional over it!)

The Thursday before we started tech, I invited my situationship over to talk. The dreaded talk. I was stressed about getting Doralee’s wig perfect, finding rehearsal space for my student organization, and on top of all the other responsibilities I had; they guy I had been seeing for about 4 months had started to pull away. We don’t need to hash out details, but it ended that night. It broke my heart. The day after I came into work at the costume shop in tears, freshly wounded.

I was met with nothing but love and support, the kind that you can only receive from people who truly care. I got to sit and cry and just feel while I sewed some snaps and buttons. Theatre is healing. Not only the stories we tell, but the manner in which we create. As I write this reflection over a month after my breakup, weeks after the show has closed, I find myself so incredibly thankful to the people, especially the women who helped lift me up. It was my honor to share this show about women empowerment with some of the kindest, most thoughtful, hard working women I know.

I learned a lot during this show. I gained great skills in wig making, getting things done under pressure, compromise… a lot of the things I expected to learn. But the most important lesson was learning that theatre and art will always be there for me. Like any relationship, we struggle and fight. We don’t get along every day. Sometimes it is hard. But I love her, and she loves me back.
